Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Morgan and McLeod’s Afro Black Label 2-25-20

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Friends,

This week’s program starts with two sets of ska beginning with the late great Roland Alphonso and a pretty tune that he cut for Studio One in 1964, “Song of Love” and the last two songs of the second set feature amazing trombone work on two Voice of the People cuts from 1965 which you don’t want to miss. Our mento set this week is heavy on the instrumentals and we ended our first hour with a set of reggae cuts that Lily assembled to honor Black History Month, starting with Wayne Wade’s 1975 reggae for Viv Jackson’s Prophets label, “Black Is Our Colour.” Our label spotlight is on another small but vital imprint, Joe Morgan and Enos McLeod’s Afro Black Label which has killer cuts from Jah Woosh, Morgan and McLeod on vocals. Stay warm and dry this week friends! XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady:  Errol & Hylton’s World Wide Label 2-18-20

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Friends,

We dedicate this week’s Bovine Ska to the memory of vocalist and instrumentalist, Derrick Lara of The Tamlins who passed away at the age of 61 on Feb 13th. In his honor we constructed this week’s reggae set in the first hour as a tribute to Derrick’s work with both The Tamlins and 7th Extension. We send our deepest respects to Derrick’s family and to his bandmates in The Tamlins. For our label spotlight this week, we looked at Errol & Hylton’s World Wide Label (1974-78), that has brilliant cuts from Max Romeo, I-Roy, Keith Poppin and Skin, Flesh, and Bones. XOXO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Keble Drummond’s Mod Label 2-11-20

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Friends,

We dedicate this week’s show to Orson Bean, F.X. Feeney, and Bill Smith, three remarkable gentlemen who passed away this weekend.  All three, in very different ways, helped to make Los Angeles better with the love and dedication to the arts and in their honor, we passed on doing our usually cynical Anti-Valentine’s Day show and instead brought out a lot of joy. We started with two sets of rare ska beginning with Keith Walker’s 1965 mock boxing ska match between Duke Reid and Prince Buster, “Musical Fight.” We followed those sets with a hand-percussion heavy mento set and followed that with jamming set of reggaes from Lily that featured the late Glen Brown’s 1974 take on Aaron Neville’s hit, “Tell It Like It Is.” Our spotlight is on Cables’ founder, Keble Drummond’s short-lived but wonderful, MOD LABEL that has top cuts from Keble and Jah Fish!  Rest in peace F.X. Orson, and Bill ❤ XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Green Berry Top Form Label 2-4-20

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Friends,

We began this show with Happy Heavenly Birthday wishes to Bob Marley, who would’ve turned 75 this Thursday, Feb 6th. In tribute, we played “One Cup of Coffee,” one of Marley’s earliest singles recorded at Beverley’s, a ska version of Claude Grey’s 1961 country classic,”I’ll Just Have Another Cup of Coffee.” We followed that song with two sets of ska that led into our weekly mento set that had a theme of “crime and punishment.” The first hour ended with a set of gorgeous reggae chosen by Lily with The African Brothers cut for Ital in 1974, “Lead Us Father.” Our label spotlight is on the small, but strong Green Berry Top Form Label that has top cuts from U-Roy and Eric Clarke with more wonderful versions from Tubby! XOXO Generoso and Lily
