Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Ronald “Nambo” Robinson Memorial Show 1-31-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners,

It is with deep sadness that we must inform you of the passing of Nambo Robinson, who played trombone on a countless number of records throughout reggae. He passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at his home in St. Andrew. Nambo was a member of the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari. The group had two primary leaders, Count Ossie and Cedric Im Brooks; Count Ossie led the percussion section, and Brooks led the horn section that Robinson was a part of. Over the next forty years, Nambo would perform on over 500 LPs, some of these recordings being amongst the most iconic in Jamaican music history. We played tracks from Nambo when he was a member of the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari as well as solo recordings and tracks from the artists he played behind like Dennis Brown, Bunny Wailer, The Heptones, Culture, and more. Rest in peace Nambo. XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Kung Fu Kingston 1-24-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

The National Museum of Jamaica recently opened an exhibition, The Spirit of Budo: The History of Japan’s Martial Arts which opened up a discussion between us about the pervasive influence that martial arts films have had in Jamaica since the genre exploded in the 1970s. Aided by the success of Jamaican Carl Douglas’ worldwide disco hit from 1974, “Kung Fu Fighting,” Jamaican reggae artists have taken their cues from the bevy of martial arts films they love so much. We avoided the cuts collected on the 2004 Trojan Kung Fu compilation and dug deep to find reggae tracks from 1971-1980 that you might hear for the first time in a long time. Massive songs about the Shaolin, kung fu and karate from U-Roy, Dillinger, Trinity, Prince Jazzbo and many more! PLEASE ADD THIS SHOW TO YOUR PLAYLIST ON MIXCLOUD or SHARE IT ON FACEBOOK. Have a great week! XO Generoso and Lily
