Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Joe Gibbs’ Shock Label 6-27-17

Welcome back Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

It’s been a hot week here in Los Angeles so we must start off our show this week with two sets of rare ska to make you sweat like us (it’s only fair) beginning with “Love Lane,” a superb 1964 cut by The Maytals for Studio One! After our bouncy weekly mento set, we put together a long set of pretty rocksteady to end the first hour. We then turn our spotlight on the rare Joe Gibbs label, SHOCK. On this short run label, you will hear great rocksteady and reggae from 1968-75 by Peter Tosh , Tommy McCook, and The Overtakers! Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit and thanks for listening. XOXO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Philadelphia International Goes Reggae 6-20-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

As a proud South Philadelphian, Generoso has played disco as the background music for the Bovine Ska since its inception in 1996 at WMBR in Cambridge, and that is why we find it amazing that we have never done an entire show where Jamaican artists cover the songs of the Philadelphia International Records label. Yes, this week you will hear the likes of The Heptones, Marcia Griffiths, Ken Boothe, and Dillinger covering the hits and rarities of Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, The O’Jays, Billy Paul, Lou Rawls, Jean Carn and so many more from the legendary label that brought disco to the world. We hope you will enjoy this show half as much as we enjoyed putting it on! Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit and thanks for listening. XOXO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: George Hargraves’ Star Label 6-13-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We start of this week’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady with two action-packed sets of version-to-version filled reggae cuts beginning with Stranger and Gladdy’s killer 1971 cut for Stranger’s own, Soul Cole label entitled, “My Application.” Over the weekend, we looked through the old setlists and realized that we never did a spotlight on the STAR LABEL! Not many tunes on this imprint, but the ones that were on it are quite great. Sensational skas and rocksteadys from 1966-68 from the likes of Roy Shirley, The Three Tops, and Jimmy Sinclair. We hope that you dig the spotlight and the show. If you do, let us know. Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit and thanks for listening! XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Herman Chin-Loy’s Scorpio Label 6-6-17

Howdy Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We begin this week’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady with a tribute to Monty Lewis who passed away suddenly over the weekend. We met Monty at a film screening shortly after arriving in Los Angeles two years ago, and he was a gregarious cinephile who we would speak to all over town before and after screenings about film and comicbooks. In his honor, our opening two sets tonight feature beautiful ska tracks that are based on classic film scores and characters. We send our heartfelt respects to Monty’s family and friends. Rest in peace Monty. Thank you for making us feel welcome at the movies here. For this week’s label spotlight we took a look at Herman Chin-Loy’s SCORPIO LABEL. which features fantastic rare reggae cuts from Ken Boothe, The Gaylads, Dennis Brown and many more. We hope you like the show. XO Generoso and Lily.
