Happy 4th of July Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

For those of you who live in the States, we wish you a happy and safe 4th of July! We begin this week’s program by wishing a happy birthday to two true pioneers of Jamaican music, Rupie Edwards and Owen Gray by playing cuts by them as part of our opening sets of early 60s, JA rhythm and blues. In the final set of the first hour, Lily went wild finding superb reggae versions of The Four Tops 1972 hit, That’s The Way Nature Planned It by Ken Boothe and Delroy Wilson. Our label spotlight this week is of the rare DC Anderson ska and reggae label, ANDERSON which contains smartly produced cuts from The Leaders, Stranger and Gladdy, and The Tropic Shadows. Let us know what you think of the show and please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit. XOXO Generoso and Lily

Welcome back Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

It’s been a hot week here in Los Angeles so we must start off our show this week with two sets of rare ska to make you sweat like us (it’s only fair) beginning with “Love Lane,” a superb 1964 cut by The Maytals for Studio One! After our bouncy weekly mento set, we put together a long set of pretty rocksteady to end the first hour. We then turn our spotlight on the rare Joe Gibbs label, SHOCK. On this short run label, you will hear great rocksteady and reggae from 1968-75 by Peter Tosh , Tommy McCook, and The Overtakers! Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit and thanks for listening. XOXO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Philadelphia International Goes Reggae 6-20-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

As a proud South Philadelphian, Generoso has played disco as the background music for the Bovine Ska since its inception in 1996 at WMBR in Cambridge, and that is why we find it amazing that we have never done an entire show where Jamaican artists cover the songs of the Philadelphia International Records label. Yes, this week you will hear the likes of The Heptones, Marcia Griffiths, Ken Boothe, and Dillinger covering the hits and rarities of Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, The O’Jays, Billy Paul, Lou Rawls, Jean Carn and so many more from the legendary label that brought disco to the world. We hope you will enjoy this show half as much as we enjoyed putting it on! Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit and thanks for listening. XOXO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: George Hargraves’ Star Label 6-13-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We start of this week’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady with two action-packed sets of version-to-version filled reggae cuts beginning with Stranger and Gladdy’s killer 1971 cut for Stranger’s own, Soul Cole label entitled, “My Application.” Over the weekend, we looked through the old setlists and realized that we never did a spotlight on the STAR LABEL! Not many tunes on this imprint, but the ones that were on it are quite great. Sensational skas and rocksteadys from 1966-68 from the likes of Roy Shirley, The Three Tops, and Jimmy Sinclair. We hope that you dig the spotlight and the show. If you do, let us know. Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit and thanks for listening! XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Herman Chin-Loy’s Scorpio Label 6-6-17

Howdy Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We begin this week’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady with a tribute to Monty Lewis who passed away suddenly over the weekend. We met Monty at a film screening shortly after arriving in Los Angeles two years ago, and he was a gregarious cinephile who we would speak to all over town before and after screenings about film and comicbooks. In his honor, our opening two sets tonight feature beautiful ska tracks that are based on classic film scores and characters. We send our heartfelt respects to Monty’s family and friends. Rest in peace Monty. Thank you for making us feel welcome at the movies here. For this week’s label spotlight we took a look at Herman Chin-Loy’s SCORPIO LABEL. which features fantastic rare reggae cuts from Ken Boothe, The Gaylads, Dennis Brown and many more. We hope you like the show. XO Generoso and Lily.

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: George “Clive” Murphy’s Tennors Label 5-23-17

Hello Howdy Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We sadly start off this week’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady with a tribute to dancehall legend, Frankie Paul, who passed away last week at the very young age of 52 years old. Paul had been hospitalized with kidney issues for some time. We wish Frankie’s family and friends our deepest condolences.

For our label spotlight this week, we dug through the crates and found many great cuts of the rocksteady and reggae variety from George “Clive” Murphy’s TENNORS LABEL. Being that it’s Murphy’s label, you would imagine tons of killer tunes from his band, The Tennors, but also amazing sounds from Eric Monty Morris, The Kingstonians, Roman Stewart and more! PLEASE ADD OUR SHOW TO YOUR PLAYLIST here on MIxcloud and share it everywhere you see fit. XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Arthur “Bunny” Robinson Memorial 5-16-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners,

It is with great sadness that we must report that legendary vocalist, Arthur “Bunny” Robinson has passed away only three months after the passing of his longtime singing partner, Noel “Scully” Simms. Bunny Robinson passed away on Wednesday, May 10th, at the age of 81 at the University of the West Indies Hospital after a four year battle with bone cancer. Our memorial for Bunny begins midway through this week’s program, with many of the tracks that he recorded with Noel Simms, as well as Robinson’s solo work and his cuts with other artists such as Claudelle Clark, Rudolph “Ruddy” Redwood, and The Messengers, where Bunny sang with Lloyd Charmers, Busty Brown, BB Seaton, and Ken Boothe. We extend our deepest sympathies to Bunny’s family and friends, and to the many musicians he worked with over his long career. Rest in peace Bunny. Love, Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Rupie Edward’s Peaceful Road Label 5-9-17

Howdy Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

THE MAY 9TH SHOW IS UP! Yes indeed, it is another Rupie Edwards produced label! You may be wondering as to why Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Radio Show is spotlighting another Edwards label, and the simple answer is that there are just some producers who put out endless magnificent tunes and Rupie is one of them. The Peaceful Road label features top reggae cuts from 1971-1976 from Dobby Dobson, U-Roy Junior, Shorty The President, and many more. We start off the show with two sets of rare ska including Roy Shirley and Ken Boothe’s 1966 scorcher from Gayfeet, “Lollipop Tonight.” You then get a blast of mento before a long set of Jamaican soul and rocksteady before the Peaceful Road Label spotlight. PLEASE ADD OUR SHOW TO YOUR PLAYLIST here on MIxcloud and share it everywhere you see fit. XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Copley Johnson’s JDI Label 5-2-17

Welcome Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We heard the upsetting news that Elton John has been in very poor health, and armed with this knowledge we set upon the task of starting the show with a set of good Jamaican covers (1971-75) of Elton’s work as a tribute, and doggonit, we think we found them. Tell us what you think of the set! As for this week’s label spotlight, this one has been very long in the making. Not only was locating the best singles from the JDI Label difficult, but information about this short run label that only existed from 1966-67 was even harder. Luckily our friend, legendary foundation singer/songwriter, Roy Panton. recorded for the label and was kind enough to share his memories about his time at JDI with us and we are so very grateful to him for that information. Thank you Roy! PLEASE ADD OUR SHOW TO YOUR PLAYLIST here on Mixcloud and share it everywhere you see fit. XO Generoso and Lily

Hi Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

This is our 100th show on Mixcloud! It worked. For our spotlight on this special show, we have picked TREVOR CHONG’S FORM LABEL, which contains amazingly pretty reggae cuts from 1974-1977 from BB Seaton, Lloyd Robinson, The Ebony Sisters and more! That spotlight happens midway through the show. We started off with two sets of rare ska and then a boisterous mento set, before ending the first hour with rocksteady.
