This week we have to share the sad news that that foundation deejay, Jah Stitch has passed away at the age of 69. We ended our first hour of this week’s show with a tribute to Jah Stitch and we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends. For our weekly label spotlight, we showcased Bertel Ellis’ rare but impressive, Silver Stars imprint. We started this week’s show with two sets of ska, beginning with a fun cut from Derrick Morgan that was cut for Prince Buster entitled, “Sleeping.” A set of mento followed that featured a newly acquired song from Lord Antics, “Sandra” and then a long wonderful reggae set from Lily that was chock full of versions which led into our spotlight of NE Williams’ MELLOWS LABEL. Top cuts abound on the spotlight from Delroy Wilson, The Melodians , Leroy Smart who were all backed by The Now Generation! Prior to recording we heard the sad news and have dedicated this week’s show to the memory of director, John Singleton, who passed away Monday from a stroke at the age of 51. XO Generoso and Lily

More sad news to share with you this week as foundation songwriter Renford “Rennie” Cogle, who was also known as “Hit Maker” passed away a few days ago. We send our deepest respects to Rennie’s family and friends as we honor him in the second hour of this week’s program. Renford wrote many of The Melodians early hits like “Sweet Sensation,” “It’s My Delight,” and “Sweet Rose” as well as sensational tracks for Brent Dowe, who Rennie co-wrote many songs with, Marcia Griffiths, Sharon Black and Delroy Wilson. Last week was a very sad week as we lost three distinct talents, Ranking Roger of the English Beat, Winston Watson of the Meditations and talented guitarist, Winston ‘Bopee’ Bowen, whose vast career that spanned over four decades which resulted in thousands of songs on some of the most important albums from the 1970s through today. Over this two hour program we memorialized Bopee’s life and those many recordings backing Gregory Issacs, Dennis Brown, John Holt and many others over his illustrious career. We send our deepest respects to Bopee’s family, students, and many collaborators as well the family and friends of Winston Watson and Ranging Roger who we will also honor in the coming weeks. Our spotlight this week is on the short-lived reggae label, Sounds of Musik, that features great rare cuts from Alton Ellis, Gregory Issacs, and Winston Scotland. We started off this week’s show with two sets of Jamaican ska that feature covers of songs that you wouldn’t imagine sounding that good in a ska rhythm, like Doris Day’s “Everybody Loves A Lover,” and Eydie Gormé’s “Melody D’ Amour,” but we love them so here they are! After our mento set and a long set of killer rocksteady, you get our spotlight. Our spotlight is a short but good one on the extremely rare Buzza Shack Label that has some killer cuts from 1971-72 from Hortense Ellis and a very young Dr. Alimantado! We ended the show with a massive and fantastic set of reggae cuts selected by Lily that are heavy on guitar in honor of Dick Dale. We heavy hearts, we dedicate this week’s show to the families and friends of the 149 passengers and 8 crew members on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 who died on Sunday morning when their plane crashed near Addis Ababa. For our show, we selected songs about Ethiopia and Africa that we send out with great respect to their memory. We also created a spotlight on singer/producer, Glen Brown’s exceptional South East Music Label which contains beautiful songs from Tommy McCook, Wayne Jarrett, God’s Children Band and Glen Brown. Though the great songwriter/arranger, Thom Bell was born in Jamaica, he meant everything to what we know as Philly soul. Bell first sang in a group with Gamble and Huff of Philadelphia Intl fame, before going to Cameo Records where he met The Delfonics and began writing hit after hit for them like, “La-La (Means I Love You)” and “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time), he would also work as an arranger for Jerry Butler, Dusty Springfield, The O’Jays and would soon write hits for them and a group he would have massive success with, The Stylistics, who were also from Philly. On this week’s show, we will hear sensational Jamaican covers of Bell’s songs done by Alton Ellis, The Chosen Few, Freddie McGregor and many more!
