Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Jamaica Sings The Bee Gees 12-11-18

Happy Holidays Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!
As you, the loyal listeners of the Bovine Ska these last 22 years know very well, we love The Bee Gees. This week’s show has been years in the making as we have selected our favorite rocksteady and reggae cuts from 1967-1982 of songs written by The Bee Gees and performed by The Bee Gees and Andy Gibb. We started by playing a superb cover by Alton Ellis of the Bee Gees first international hit “, Massachusetts,” and then moved on to cuts like Freddie McGregor’s version of “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” and followed that with great reggae and dub interpretations of the brother’s disco classics that you all know so well. Please add this show to your playlist, favorite it, or share it wherever people love The Bee Gees and the sounds of a young Jamaica. happy Holidays! XOXO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Our 22nd Jamaican Christmas Fantastical 12-3-18

Happy Holidays Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!
For the 22nd straight year we are celebrating the holiday season on the Bovine Ska and Rocksteady with beloved cuts of Jamaican rocksteady, reggae, mento of a Christmas kind. For our theme, given that Jamaica was an English colony at one time, some Jamaican Christmas customs are influenced by England’s traditions of the same holiday. However, these Jamaican traditions have become truly their own and we discussed them on this year’s Bovine Ska as well as playing classic and rare holiday cuts from Alton Ellis, Laurel Aitken, John Holt, and The Heptones to name a few. Please add this show to your playlist, favorite it, or share it wherever people love the holidays and the sounds of a young Jamaica. Merry Christmas! XOXO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: The Links Label 11-27-18

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners,

Even more sad news to pass along this week. Just a few days after Pastor Dr. Norris Weir of the legendary vocal group, The Jamaicans, passed away, we received the upsetting news that Trevor McNaughton, a founding and last surviving member of The Melodians passed away on November 20th at the age of 77. Generoso was fortunate to have met Trevor on a few occasions over the years and found him to be an exceptionally talented vocalist and gentleman. We honored Trevor and the group he helped make famous on this week’s program by playing songs that Trevor wrote and sang lead on, but also by spotlighting the label that he formed with The Melodians, Ken Boothe and Delroy Wilson, The Links Label. We send our love and respects to Trevor’s family and friends at this sad time.

We send our deepest condolences to the Pastor’s wife, Fay, their family, and all of his colleagues and friends. In tribute to the Pastor, we started this week’s show with a set of Norris’ best work as both a solo artist and member of The Jamaicans. For our label spotlight this week, we focused on Hubert Cunningham’s Lord Cunningham Label, which features a rare mix of mento, Gospel, and reggae cuts from such artists as Max Romeo, Barrington Spence and Hubert himself. Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Generoso’s 50th Birthday Show! 1968 Galore! 10-9-18

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!
Sunday, October 14th, 2018 is Generoso’s 50th birthday, and so like he has done for these last 22 years, we have filled this week’s Bovine Ska with nothing but Jamaican cuts from the year of his birth, 1968, so expect to hear some wonderful rocksteadys and reggaes in this celebration. The first two sets feature cuts with “1968” in the title and we have even “intensified” the first set as 50 is a big birthday. For the remainder of the show, we borrowed an expression from our good friend Stranger Cole who says: “More LIfe. More Music,” so all of our songs will have “music” or “life” in the title, like Prince Buster’s “Musical College” and Delano Stewart’s “That’s Life.” Feel free to leave Generoso a birthday wish in the comments section and please share the show!
