Happy Anti-Valentine’s Day Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

It is not a secret that we despise Valentine’s Day. This holiday, if taken seriously, will put a strain on both long and short terms relationships and will even on occasion, be the impetus for the relationship-ending death blow. That is why for every Valentine’s Day since 1997, we have done a radio show where we play magnificent Jamaican songs pertaining to romantic sadness, and this year’s theme is LYING AND CHEATING! As today, February 6th, is Robert Nesta Marley’s birthday, we started off our show this week with a rare early cut from Mr. Marley on Beverleys that we know you will enjoy and we followed that track up with two sets of early Jamaican rhythm and blues and ska. We then decided that our label spotlight will be on Marley’s Studio One label mate, Jackie Estick’s rocksteady and reggae imprint, ESTICK. Top rocksteady and reggae cuts from 1968-1970 on that label sung by Winston Samuels, Cecile Campbell, and Tony Scott! There is as always our mento set and a long set of rocksteady to keep you in the groove. Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

Shortly after we released last week’s Bovine Ska, we found out that Neil Diamond, one of America’s finest songwriters, and an artist whom we love a great deal was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and due to this diagnosis, Diamond will cancel the remaining dates on his 50th anniversary tour and he will not perform live again. Neil’s songs have been covered by everyone from Elvis Presley to Bobby Womack to Johnny Cash here in the States, and in Jamaica there have been amazing versions of his music performed by magnificent singers such as John Holt, Marcia Griffiths, Nicky Thomas, Max Romeo and many more. We have assembled these covers as our tribute to Neil Diamond and we hope that you enjoy this version special show. Thank you Neil for all of your music! XOXO Generoso and Lily

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We begin this week’s show with sad news and a tribute to Steve “Grizzly” Nesbitt, the original drummer of Steel Pulse passed away on Jan 18th at the age of 69. We played a few early cuts that truly exemplify Steve’s brilliance behind the kit. We send love and respect to Steve’s family and the members of Steel Pulse. For our label spotlight this week, we should say that if you have listened to the Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Radio Show these last twenty plus years know exactly how much we love The High Priest of Reggae, the late Roy Shirley. Our focus is on Shirley’s own PUBLIC LABEL, which as you imagine features many a splendid cut from Roy himself. Amazing productions all around from 1968-1972 that should knock you out. An early imprint for Gussie that features top reggae from 1973-78 from The Heptones, Horace Andy, and The Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Emmanuel Brown. We started off this week’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady with two sets of ska, beginning with Stranger Cole and Patsy Todd’s 1965 joyous cut for Buster’s Voice of the People Label, “When I Realize.” The weekly mento set followed with another wonderful track from the Falconaires 1963 LP on RCA, and then a long set of smoking hot reggae from Lily that should get you in the mood for this week’s spotlight on Ranny Williams’ Spade label. Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We started off this week’s Bovine Ska with a tribute to the wonderful French singer, France Gall, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 70. As France’s real name was Isabelle Geneviève Marie Anne Gall, we put together a set of Jamaican rhythm and blues cuts, each song having one of her names in the title beginning with Teddy Brown’s pretty 1961 cut for Starline, “Genevieve.” After another set of rhythm and blues, our mento set, and a long set of rare rocksteadys, we did our spotlight on singer/producer Lloyd Clarke’s one label, KING’S. Fantastic soul and reggaes on that imprint from 1968-69 sung by Joe White, Roy Shirley, Willie Francis, and The Templets! PLEASE SHARE our show where you see can! Happy Holidays Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

It is December 26th, and Lily and I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas Day with friends and family! We spent our Christmas Day putting the final touches on this week’s Bovine Ska which takes a look at Jamaica’s love for the soul vocal group from Atlanta, Georgia, The Tams! Though not as well-known in the States as many of the Motown and Stax groups from the same era, The Tams made a huge impression in Jamaica as artist after artist from Delroy Wilson to Derrick Harriott to Johnny Clarke would cut versions of the songs that our vocal group released in the 1960s and 70s.
