Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

Artists such as The Blues Busters, Dennis Brown, Boris Gardiner and Alton Ellis all covering Green on this very special program. Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Earl “Wire” Lindo Memorial 9-12-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners

Sadly, this is our third week in a row where we must memorialize another Jamaican music legend who has passed away. This week we give our deepest respects to the late great keyboardist, Earl Lindo, who sadly died on September 4th at the age of 64 in London. Lily and I have put together a two hour memorial featuring Wya’s finest work as a solo performer, as a member of the Now Generation, and as an artist backing everyone from Burning Spear to Joe Higgs to The Heptones to of course, Bob Marley and the Wailers on some of the most iconic reggae recordings of their era. We send our deepest condolences to Wya’s family, friends and fellow musicians. Rest in peace Wya. Love and respect, Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Larry Marshall Memorial 9-5-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Friends,

Sadly, one day after we heard the news of the passing of Winston Samuels, we received word that the great Studio One vocalist, Larry Marshall had also left us. Marshall passed away on August 24th at the age of 75 in Florida, where he had lived since the 1990s. As we have often said during the past two decades on the Bovine Ska, Larry Marshall remains as one of the most underrated singers in Jamaican music history. At the halfway point of this week’s program, we will spotlight Larry’s extensive career as a singer, and we also looked at his wonderful production work for his labels: Amanda and Marshall. We send our deepest respects to the family and friends of Larry Marshall during this difficult time. Love and respect, Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Jamaica Covers Barry White 8-22-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

Perhaps it is the sultry August weather here in Los Angeles, but recently we have increased our normal intake of the late maestro, Barry White. Heaven only knows how many times Barry has supplied us with more than his fair share of accompaniment during the last twenty one years of the Bovine Ska and Rocksteady and this week, his compositions move to the forefront by way of some spectacularly cool Jamaican covers from 1974-1976 by artists such as Lloyd Charmers and Jackie Mittoo taking a turn with “I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More” and Tommy McCook with White’s “Love Theme” and so many more. This hour long tribute happens midway through this week’s program. PLEASE add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and SHARE it wherever you see fit. We’ll be back next week as always! XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Jackie Brown’s Telegraph Label 8-15-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

We start off this week’s show on a sad note, as we are sure that all of you know by now that legendary guitarist and vocalist, Glen Campbell passed away last week at the age of 81. Both Lily and I are huge fans of Glen’s and in his honor we begin this week’s Bovine Ska with a long set of reggae covers of songs that Glen made famous. Rest in peace Glen. After a mento set and a pretty set of Jamaican soul, we went into our label spotlight, which this week is on artist/producer Jackie Brown’s TELEGRAPH LABEL (1972-76). Wonderful reggae cuts from Roy Shirley, Honey Boy Williams, and of course, Jackie Brown himself! Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit. We’ll be back next week as always! XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Ewan McDermott’s Jolly Label 8-8-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

Hope that you all had a wonderful Jamaica Independence Day! On this week’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady, Lily and I begin with two sets of chunky, version to version heavy reggae from 1971-78. Our mento set this week features a recently acquired MRS label cut that we have never played before, from our favorite mento artist, Count Lasher. We end the first hour with a long set of rare rocksteadys before going into our spotlight of Ewan McDermott’s Jolly Label. Only one ska tune on Jolly, with the rest being sensational rocksteadys and reggaes. Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit. We’ll be back next week as always! XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Let’s Celebrate Jamaica Independence Day! 8-1-17

Happy Jamaica Independence Day Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

Sunday, August 6th, 2017 is the 55th anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence and so, Lily and I will help you celebrate on this week’s show by playing loads of songs written by Jamaica’s about their beautiful country. Wonderful cuts like Laurel Aitken’s “Sweet Jamaica” from 1963, Joe Higgs’ “Invitation To Jamaica” from 1972, and of course, Miss Lou, Louise Bennett with her version of the alphabet, Jamaican style of course. Though great, we completely avoided the tracks on Trojan Record’s “Jamaica Box Set.” Lily will share with you some of Jamaica’s history and specifically a bit about the Commonwealth Games that were held in Jamaica in 1966. PLEASE do add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit. Happy Independence Day Jamaica! XO Generoso and Lily
