Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Rupie Edward’s Peaceful Road Label 5-9-17

Howdy Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

THE MAY 9TH SHOW IS UP! Yes indeed, it is another Rupie Edwards produced label! You may be wondering as to why Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Radio Show is spotlighting another Edwards label, and the simple answer is that there are just some producers who put out endless magnificent tunes and Rupie is one of them. The Peaceful Road label features top reggae cuts from 1971-1976 from Dobby Dobson, U-Roy Junior, Shorty The President, and many more. We start off the show with two sets of rare ska including Roy Shirley and Ken Boothe’s 1966 scorcher from Gayfeet, “Lollipop Tonight.” You then get a blast of mento before a long set of Jamaican soul and rocksteady before the Peaceful Road Label spotlight. PLEASE ADD OUR SHOW TO YOUR PLAYLIST here on MIxcloud and share it everywhere you see fit. XO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Copley Johnson’s JDI Label 5-2-17

Welcome Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We heard the upsetting news that Elton John has been in very poor health, and armed with this knowledge we set upon the task of starting the show with a set of good Jamaican covers (1971-75) of Elton’s work as a tribute, and doggonit, we think we found them. Tell us what you think of the set! As for this week’s label spotlight, this one has been very long in the making. Not only was locating the best singles from the JDI Label difficult, but information about this short run label that only existed from 1966-67 was even harder. Luckily our friend, legendary foundation singer/songwriter, Roy Panton. recorded for the label and was kind enough to share his memories about his time at JDI with us and we are so very grateful to him for that information. Thank you Roy! PLEASE ADD OUR SHOW TO YOUR PLAYLIST here on Mixcloud and share it everywhere you see fit. XO Generoso and Lily

Hi Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

This is our 100th show on Mixcloud! To celebrate this event, we have done what we have done every Tuesday since 1996, we have performed another edition of The Bovine Ska and Rocksteady, except that this time we ate cookies while we did it to FEEL more festive. It worked. For our spotlight on this special show, we have picked TREVOR CHONG’S FORM LABEL, which contains amazingly pretty reggae cuts from 1974-1977 from BB Seaton, Lloyd Robinson, The Ebony Sisters and more! That spotlight happens midway through the show. We started off with two sets of rare ska and then a boisterous mento set, before ending the first hour with rocksteady. PLEASE ADD OUR SHOW TO YOUR PLAYLIST here on MIxcloud and share it everywhere you see fit. Here’s to the next one hundred shows. See you again next Tuesday! XOXO Generoso and Lily

One that features a spotlight of Hugh Madden’s short-lived but vital ELECTRO LABEL! Killer reggaes 1971-74 from The Cables, Bongo Herman, The In Crowd and many others. The Electro Label spotlight is midway through the show of course. We began this show with two sets of rare Jamaican rhythm and blues cuts that Lily loves so very much, followed by some naughty mento, and a long set of rocksteady prior to the label spotlight. Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Collins Down Beat Label 4-4-17

Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners, welcome to your show!

We had a blast this past weekend finding all the cuts needed for this week’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady. We started off with two sets of blazing rare ska, including Joe White and Chuck’s 1964 cut for Treasure Isle, “Punch You Down,” and from SEP, Lord Tanamo’s, “The Beginning.” Our mento set was strung together with songs about cricket (or using cricket for a nasty metaphor). Our spotlight is on Clancy Collins’ (Sir Collins if you’re feeling formal) rocksteady-filled COLLINS DOWN BEAT LABEL (1967-68) that features top tunes from Owen Gray and The Uniques. PLEASE ADD OUR SHOW TO YOUR PLAYLIST here on MIxcloud and share it everywhere you see fit. See you next Tuesday XOXO Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Jamaican Music for Children 5-30-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

As the summer is fastly approaching and as schools begin to close, we thought to do our first ever 100% children friendly edition of the Bovine Ska and Rocksteady in our twenty-one year history. We will not only play Jamaican “ring songs,” in various rhythms, but Lily will also explain the games. We will have ska versions of “play songs,” and so many cool reggae, ska, and rocksteady versions of English nursery rhymes by everyone from Prince Buster to Eric Morris to The Gaylads for you and the kids to dance to this week. Our background disco will of the 1970s Sesame Street and Mickey Mouse variety which should add an extra layer of silly fun. PLEASE ADD OUR SHOW TO YOUR PLAYLIST here on MIxcloud and share it everywhere you see fit. Hugs, Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Wentworth Vernal Memorial 3-28-17

Welcome Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners,

Sadly, last Wednesday we heard from our friend Dudley Sibley that his fellow Studio One performer, vocalist Wentworth Vernal of The Termites had passed away. To honor Wentworth, we used our spotlight midway through this week’s program to showcase Wentworth’s amazing vocal work with the band he helped form, The Termites, as well as his solo wonderful work with Studio One. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dudley on the loss of his friend, and to Wentworth’s family and former collaborators. Much love and respect, Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Count Bell’s President Label 3-14-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners,

Over the weekend, we were both under the weather in a big way, so to pass the time we pulled some fiendishly rare records for this Tuesday’s Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Radio Show, beginning with two sets of glorious rocksteady cuts and a spotlight of Count Bell’s obscure small run Jamaican R&B label, President (not the reggae imprint run by Eddy Grant). Even though this label was short-lived, there were some classic tunes released by Derrick Morgan, Yvonne Harrison Theo Beckford, and Lloyd Clarke. If you enjoy the show please add it to your playlist here on Mixcloud or share it on your favorite social media channel 🙂 We’ll be back next Tuesday as always 🙂 XOXO Generoso and Lily
