Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Delroy Dunkley’s Dee’s Label 7-18-17

Welcome Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

First off, thank you so very much for listening and sharing last week’s Bovine Ska Sam Cooke tribute as it was one of the most popular shows that we have done here on Mixcloud. The summer is in full force here in Los Angeles, so we spent a lot of time indoors pulling tracks for this week’s show so we think you’ll really dig it. We start off with two sets of killer reggae from 1972-75, beginning with Slim Smith and John Holt fantastic cut for Jackpot, “Turning Point.” After our mento set and a long set of Jamaican R&B, we dug into a spotlight of Delroy Dunkley’s short-lived (1961-62) rare, but fun, DEE’S LABEL. That means more wonderful Jamaican rhythm and blues with pretty cuts from Theo Beckford, Basil Gabbidon, and Raymond Harper! Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit. Hugs from Generoso and Lily

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Jamaica Covers Sam Cooke 7-11-2017

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady listeners!

We love Sam Cooke, so very very much, and so have the recording artists of Jamaica, who over the years have cut sensational versions of Mr. Cooke’s extensive songwriting catalog. Not only have artists such as John Holt, Johnny Clarke, and Dudley Sibley recorded superb versions of Sam’s songs, but vocalists like Pat Kelly, Ken Parker, and Eugene Paul have embodied the actual voice of the man who many call The King of Soul. For this week’s program, we listened to dozens upon dozens of ska, rocksteady, and reggae interpretations of Cooke’s songs and we have selected our favorites to play for you on this week’s very special show in honor of the late Sam Cooke. We hope that you enjoy this show as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Please us know what you think of the show and do add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit. XOXO Generoso and Lily

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

As a proud South Philadelphian, Generoso has played disco as the background music for the Bovine Ska since its inception in 1996 at WMBR in Cambridge, and that is why we find it amazing that we have never done an entire show where Jamaican artists cover the songs of the Philadelphia International Records label. Yes, this week you will hear the likes of The Heptones, Marcia Griffiths, Ken Boothe, and Dillinger covering the hits and rarities of Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, The O’Jays, Billy Paul, Lou Rawls, Jean Carn and so many more from the legendary label that brought disco to the world. We hope you will enjoy this show half as much as we enjoyed putting it on! Please add our show to your playlist here on Mixcloud and share it wherever you see fit and thanks for listening. Howdy Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners!

We begin this week’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady with a tribute to Monty Lewis who passed away suddenly over the weekend. We met Monty at a film screening shortly after arriving in Los Angeles two years ago, and he was a gregarious cinephile who we would speak to all over town before and after screenings about film and comicbooks. In his honor, our opening two sets tonight feature beautiful ska tracks that are based on classic film scores and characters. We send our heartfelt respects to Monty’s family and friends. Rest in peace Monty. Thank you for making us feel welcome at the movies here. For this week’s label spotlight we took a look at Herman Chin-Loy’s SCORPIO LABEL. which features fantastic rare reggae cuts from Ken Boothe, The Gaylads, Dennis Brown and many more. We hope you like the show. XO Generoso and Lily.

Generoso and Lily’s Bovine Ska and Rocksteady: Arthur “Bunny” Robinson Memorial 5-16-17

Hello Bovine Ska and Rocksteady Listeners,

It is with great sadness that we must report that legendary vocalist, Arthur “Bunny” Robinson has passed away only three months after the passing of his longtime singing partner, Noel “Scully” Simms. Bunny Robinson passed away on Wednesday, May 10th, at the age of 81 at the University of the West Indies Hospital after a four year battle with bone cancer. Our memorial for Bunny begins midway through this week’s program, with many of the tracks that he recorded with Noel Simms, as well as Robinson’s solo work and his cuts with other artists such as Claudelle Clark, Rudolph “Ruddy” Redwood, and The Messengers, where Bunny sang with Lloyd Charmers, Busty Brown, BB Seaton, and Ken Boothe. We extend our deepest sympathies to Bunny’s family and friends, and to the many musicians he worked with over his long career. Rest in peace Bunny. Love, Generoso and Lily
